Summer vacation & making memories.
This week, I am preparing to take a 3 day mini-getaway to the Maquoketa Caves with my family and our close friends. The children are pretty excited to explore and discover the great outdoors! I heard the sights and views will be amazing! We are camping for 3 days in a tent (so send me your good thoughts for mild weather!) Then the countdown REALLY begins, when they realize how close we are to our annual summer vacation to Lake Okoboji!
A family reunion now in its 36th year! Wow. 36 years of good times and great memories- each year new family members are added by wedded bliss or birth. My own husband was only a toddler when the tradition began. Now, I get to watch my boys- swim with cousins, climb the rocket slide, share in kitchen patrol “KP” duty and participate in the tournament games (Bocce, golf, washers) in an attempt to gain an engraved spot on the plaque for that year.
Treasuring the memories
Prior to having my children, I spent a great deal of time actually scrap-booking. It is pretty amazing to consider, how much this has changed in the last 10 years! Storing and sharing our photographed events was a much more physical and mechanical process. I spent many hours lovingly decorating pages- dedicated to a person or special occasion. I have a collection of books created by my mother of my childhood, my youth and into adulthood. Oh, and the videos! I used to love filming friends & events with my huge camcorder and sharing the recordings with anyone who would watch! I filmed at my prom, was a tour guide of my first house, captured a cherished word exchange in what would-be a last visit with my grandma. I get a glimpse in to a time capsule and it is so beautiful to know I can share those things with my children.
Then, sometime in the last decade it changed. Social media took off and I just “stored” my precious images in whatever on-line program I was operating!
I upgraded my camera and video camera, and then just left 100’s of images on a storage card or on-line “cloud” type of file storage.
I cringe to think of all of the images that could have been lost on my phone or computer when those devices abruptly failed. And they did.
It is a giant mess. My children’s biggest moments, bravest feats- all scattered. School days, summer vacations and video clips just uploaded in a randomly named on-line album or folder. What will I pass on to them? How will they look back and watch these special moments?
Well, Let me introduce to my friends at MiMedia- I promise, if you haven’t heard of them yet, you will soon.
