Review written by Melissa Swedoski
Every year it keeps coming around: the gift giving holiday season. And every year, I seem somehow shocked and amazed, occasionally whimpering and crying. It’s kind of the way my kids react to bedtime every night: like they are totally shocked by this turn of events, eyes wide like a deer trapped in headlights.
And so each year we work to find a gift they will both want. I know this won’t last forever; they are their own individual personalities, and at some point their differences are going to show up in more than just what vegetables they are willing to eat. But for now, it still holds up. Last year, we bought them the tiny little Power Wheels. This year, they will each get their first toddler bike with training wheels. One wants Hello Kitty, one wants the Disney princesses.
They both want a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle helmet. Go figure.
In addition, of course, I try to pick up a few other things, toys that I know will be fought over if I try to distinguish “This is for you, this is for her.” When your kids are only 15 months apart AND the same gender, you have to learn to play fast and loose with the sharing rules.
This year, they both also requested books. One likes Pinkalicious, the other likes Ladybug Girl. They both love to read. Rather, they love to be read to, although they are both currently working on pre-reading skills. They want to be able to read what they want, when they want and not just rely on Mom and Dad.
Then my wonderful friends at Hallmark shared this idea with me: personalized books. They have titles for several occasions, including one for Christmas. There are stories for girls and boys, with 12 titles to choose from, along with two additional titles in Spanish.
I opted to pick Leelou’s Night Before Christmas. The first thing I noticed was the artwork. It is colorful and bright, and very festive. The second thing I noticed is that my child’s name was used several times in the book, not just once or twice in an awkward sentence kind of way. It made sense to the storyline.
Once you decide which book you want, you to to the “Personalize” page. There, you will change the name, skin tone, eye color, hair color and hairstyle. In addition, you fill out the “From” section, so the child will always know who gave them this magical gift.
The gift of reading never goes out of style.
