This #AskAwayFriday I partnered with the sassy, smart and snarky Dana from Kiss My List, and I honestly have to say it was one of my favorite weeks! Exploring her blog was incredibly fun! She writes about every topic and is SO FUNNY! Wife and mom of two, she is a contributor to the AMAZING The Mother of All Meltdowns and HerStories
Make sure to follow Dana at Kiss My List here:
Here are the questions Dana had for me this week!
1. You’ve had careers in a few different fields. If you had to go back into the work force today, what would you do?
LOL! I have. There is a story here. Going into highschool I had no desire to continue school any longer than I had to, or so I thought. Luckily Massachusetts has a trade school or vocational highschool option. I graduated with a diploma AND enough hours to take state boards and become licensed in both Cosmetology & Esthetics.
Then, Senior year I basically freaked out about life. I signed up for the army with a buddy. Anyone who knows me, would understand this was not a good choice. Lucky for me, I was only 17, so I could change my mind. PHEW. However unlucky for my buddy, she went alone and was miserable. We are still friends after all of these years. Colleges started recruiting me and I ended up near Boston at an (at the time) ALL Women’s college. Also hilarious to anyone who knows me. It was a great decision though. However I had a habit of choosing fields based on my interest and not necessarily, career longevity and future income. I studied and graduated with a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Administration. I was able to work as a hairdresser, while attending college. I made a great income that afforded lots of clothes and trips, but I wish I had been wiser about paying for school and saving money. I participated in life changing internships in DisneyWorld and Myrtle Beach SC. I told myself some day I would pursue a Masters Degree in Business or Marketing- however I wish I had just done it then! I worked at the Ritz Carlton in Boston, then for a European tour company in the Sales/Marketing department. I LOVED that job. I also STILL worked for the same salon, part-time as a hairdresser. However, two years later the tour company merged with the headquarters in New York. I had no desire to relocate to NY and in a weird chain of events ended up in Iowa with an Aunt & Uncle. I took the first job in Marketing I could find, so that I could have much needed $ and was with them for over 5 years (BONUS! met my husband). The 8-5 hours did not allow me to work on getting my Iowa state licence in Cosmetology, so I never transferred it.:-(
I greatly missed the travel industry, but admittedly Iowa is not a hotspot for that 🙂 I found a job in a hotel sales department, but it was a short & terrible experience (not the job, the company) but it lead to a Corporate Travel Manager position with one of my clients, a HUGE construction forming company. I LOVED it. I would have stayed there forever, but the economy turned bad and my position was eventually eliminated. I was replaced by the on-line self-booking tool, I put in to place for the company. Two weeks after being unemployed and ready to begin IVF… I was asked to start marketing for a local real estate office, immediately. After a few weeks, I began the process of getting my state license. I did really well, but it is not my passion. The travel industry is and when I return to the work force I hope to work in that industry, but hopefully in a corporate setting. Again, Iowa is not the ideal spot for the Travel industry.
Whew! not all of my answers will be that long, but I have a unusual career history!
2. Tell me something quirky about yourself.
I still cut the crust of my bread and never completely finish a beverage. Any wonder why I have a picky eater?
3. What is your favorite hour of the day? Why?
4. Before you had children, did you imagine yourself as a mother of girls, boys, or both? How has being the mom of two boys been different than you thought it would be?
LOL! That is the exact topic of this week’s True Tales! Growing up, I always thought I’d have a girl. I adore being the mother of boys. I have learned so much from them. I had very little experience in the “little boy world” and was so scared when Hayden was born. It has been the best adventure! Now I fear having a girl, because I know boys!
5. Your husband is home with the boys and you have an entire afternoon to yourself. What do you do?
6. You grew up in Massachusetts and now live in Iowa. Did anything about life in the middle of the US take awhile to get used to? Do you consider yourself an East Coaster or a Midwesterner?
It is a somewhat slower pace and they are just now getting Dunkin Donuts. The cost of living is WAY better here. I don’t have any future plans to leave Iowa, but I AM A NEW ENGLAND-ER, ♥ & soul! I will always refer to it as my home.
Go PATS! Go SOX!
7. Tamara from Tamara Like Camera asked me this one, so now I’m asking you: What is something you have never done, that you think most people have done? Never have I ever…
Been on a diet. Trust me, it is a reverse curse, I have always needed to gain weight. I would look much better with an extra 10-15 lbs.
I am laughing at this question because there was very little I could think of in response! I was a wild child!
8. I love to read and am always looking for a good book. What do you recommend? If the only thing you get a chance to read is the back of a cereal box, tell me one of your childhood favorites.
I most recently read Sharp Objects and Orphan Train and loved them both. The Silent Wife is next on my list, but I am feeling short of time for the next few weeks! I want to see some of the Oscar nominated films and watch Orange is the New Black.
Favorite cereal from childhood? Hmmm I never really cared for cereal (which is funny because the hubby & boys devour it). Maybe Reese’s Puffs, lol!
9. You’ve been blogging for a year (congratulations!). What are a few of your goals for your second year of blogging?
I am an oddity, I came out of the gate swinging (or at least trying to) and in my second year I really want to enjoy. Focus on building more relationships, rather than focusing on numbers. I need to figure out how to fit it all in, without overwhelming myself and making it a job, opposed to my passion. With limited hours, it is a challenge to write, edit photos, promote and visit other blogs….I want to to visit others more!
Oh and I would love to get a blog re-design! Did I mention how great Dana’s blog looks?
10. Time for “Would You Rather”: Would you rather spend an entire day running errands without a bra or without shoes? It’s summertime – so no covering up with a sweater!
I have been laughing at this question all week. Okay here it goes…. no bra would be less noticeable. I am small chested, it is entirely possible no one would notice. My feet on the other hand, they would.
Speaking of shoes…..
Thank you for the fun swap this week, Dana! I really look forward to following your blog more! 🙂
See everyone next #AskAwayFriday! OR BEFORE!
